In his first senior start, Kenny Perry hopes to turn disappointing season around

Kenny Perry had a bad feeling when his putter fell apart in his first PGA Tour event of the year, the SBS Championship in Hawaii.

No, not his putting stroke fell apart. His actual putter went to pieces.

Perry was hitting his final practice putt before teeing off at Kapalua when the putter head fell right off the shaft. His favorite one, too.

Perry turned to his son who was caddying and said, "Justin, it's going to be a bad year."

The 14-time winner on the PGA Tour turned 50 on Aug. 10, making him eligible for the Champions Tour, and he'll make his debut Friday at the Administaff Small Business Classic -- hoping that the new scenery will help him rejuvenate his game.

"I've had a smile on my face this week," said Perry, who has played on two Ryder Cup teams and three Presidents Cup teams. "It's neat to get back with the guys you played with in your junior years. They've been calling me rookie all week. I have a hard time getting used to that. It's hard to believe I'm 50."

Perry missed the cut in three of the last five PGA Tour events he played, then spent six weeks off to rest and prepare for the senior circuit.

"It seems I went flat this year," Perry said. "In all the years I was on the tour I felt like I needed to win. I didn't feel like I needed to win this year. It was just a letdown. We're going to rekindle the fire this offseason and see what happens."

Perry already is feeling better after taking time off.

"It's been a neat two days since I've been here," he said. "I've had all the guys coming up and welcoming me to this tour -- Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange, Mark O'Meara, Ben Crenshaw. It's the who's who of golf. All these guys I've looked up to my whole career and who made me the player I am and they're all here playing."

Perry was a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup team and had a good year in 2009 with victories at the FBR Open and the Travelers Championship. He tied for second in the Masters and fourth at the Tour Championship, before everything suddenly unraveled.

"I'd kind of gotten burned out," he said. "I threw everything I have at the '08 Ryder Cup and it seemed from then on I've lost focus. ... I had a good 2009 but this year has seemed to be just a mediocre year. I didn't have goals. I was just plodding along."

Perry said equipment problems contributed to his poor 2010 season, starting with the demise of his beloved putter.

"It's been magic for me the last three years," Perry said. "It all started right there at Kapalua. I went into a funk putting this year. I re-shafted that putter four times, sent it back to Ping and it never looked the same again."

Perry said he has changed every club in his bag except his 3-wood.

"It threw me for a little bit of adjustment, trying to figure what I can use and what I can't and I never got comfortable with anything this year," Perry said. "I didn't drive the ball, I didn't hit my irons well, so it was a new learning curve for me."

With all his hard luck this year, Perry likes what his Champions Tour friends are saying.

"Their advice to me was that you're going to have fun," Perry said. "It's totally different from the PGA Tour. I feel that. They're relaxed and laid back and having a good time. I've been on the tour for 25 years and it's a welcomed relief."

Steve Lowery also is playing in his first Champions Tour event. A victory by either newcomer would mark the 16th time a rookie won his first event. Tom Pernice Jr. last accomplished the feat when he won the 2009 SAS Championship.

John Cook edged Jay Haas by one shot to win the Administaff event last year, when he sank a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 17 to take the lead for good. Bernhard Langer, the Charles Schwab points leader, and second-place Fred Couples are also playing this week.

Perry has four exempt years remaining on the PGA Tour, but his focus is only on this week.

"You'll probably see me splitting time," Perry said. "If I keep having a lot of fun like I'm having this week, I might branch on over this way more."

Not Being Able To Run Was 'Biggest Disappointment'

The Ravens finished with the league's lowest average yards per carry mark this year.



If there’s one thing that Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh looks back on with the most regret in 2013, it’s not being able to run the ball.

“That’s probably our biggest disappointment, because really, we’re built – and we philosophically believe – in being a rough, tough, physical offense that can run the football,” Harbaugh said Tuesday in his season-ending press conference.

“That’s the way we started, and that hasn’t changed. No matter where you go with the passing game, that has got to be a staple of what we’re going to do. And, it wasn’t this year.”

The Ravens averaged a league-low 3.1 yards per carry in 2013. That’s the worst mark in franchise history. The next closest was 3.4 yards per carry in 2006, which ranked 31st. The Ravens averaged 4.3 yards per carry last season.

Baltimore put up just 83 rushing yards per game, ranked 30th in the NFL. That, too, is the worst mark in franchise history. The Ravens had never been below 100 yards per game (100.3 in 2005). Baltimore averaged 118.8 last season.

It was Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice’s worst year of his career (660 rushing yards), and second-year backupBernard Pierce saw his average yards per carry drop by a whopping two yards (4.9 to 2.9).

So why was it so bad?

“It’s a lot of things,” Harbaugh said.

“You’ve got to be able to throw the ball well enough to protect your running game and back people off. OK, that’s one thing. We didn’t always do that. You’ve got to be able to block people, move people and knock people around well enough to run the ball. You’ve got to be able to create some angles and some situations where there are mismatches. And, you’ve got to be able to make some plays out there when plays aren’t there to create some yards.

“Across the board, coaches and players, those are all things we just weren’t able to put together. We tried like crazy, but we didn’t put it together this year.”

Baltimore had some scheme changes with the addition of Run Game Coordinator Juan Castillo. That took some time to develop.

There were also changes along the offensive line, including new starting center Gino Gradkowski,A.Q. Shipley replacing Kelechi Osemele (back surgery) at left guard, and a rotating left tackle with Bryant McKinnie being traded and Eugene Monroe stepping in. A hip, then thigh injury to Rice, and hamstring injury for Pierce, also contributed.

The Ravens were forced to move away from their running attack early in the season when it was clear it wasn’t working. They became a pass-first team with the run game as a complement that hopefully put them in better passing situations and tried to keep defenses honest.

That also meant less snaps for Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach. The big bruiser played just 12 offensive snaps in the Ravens’ final three games, and saw a drop-off after Week 5.

“We started off with a two-back foundation, and we couldn’t run the ball well enough to base the offense on the run game,” Harbaugh said. “And I think we came to that realization, and we had to move away from it, which took Vonta off the field more.”

The Ravens had problems scoring touchdowns in the red zone in 2013, and part of the reason was an in ability to run the ball in. They scored just seven rushing touchdowns, tied for 28th in the NFL.

Harbaugh was asked whether he would like Baltimore to add a big-bodied runner in the 240-pound range to try to force the ball in the end zone. He said he’s had conversations with General Manager Ozzie Newsome, Assistant General Manager Eric DeCosta, scouts and coaches about that.“Yes, I think we need to diversify as much as we can what guys can do,” Harbaugh said. “We want to have as many weapons as we can at our disposal. Big backs, fast backs, quick backs, route-running backs that you see around the league – we want to chase all those guys. You can’t always get everything you want, but those are things that we could use.”

　米国男子ツアー「ザ・マクグラドレー・クラシック」の3日目。大会2日目のサスペンデットとなったため残った第2ラウンドを消化し第3ラウンドが始まった。その第3ラウンドは無事全選手がホールアウトした。

　そんな大会3日目クリス・カーク（米国）とベテランのブライニー・ベアードの2人が通算10アンダーで並び首位に立った。

　その2人と1打差の通算9アンダー3位タイにはケビン・スタドラー（米国）、ブライアン・ゲイ（米国）、ジョン・センデン（オーストラリア）の3人が並び、続く通算8アンダー6位タイにはスコット・ブラウン（米国）、ブレンダン・トッド（米国）がつけた。

　米国男子ツアー「ザ・マクグラドレー・クラシック」の最終日。首位タイからスタートしたクリス・カーク(米国)が5バーディ・1ボギーの66をマーク。スコアを4つ伸ばしトータル14アンダーで11年の「バイキング・クラシック」以来となるツアー通算2勝目を挙げた。

　同じく首位タイから出たブライニー・ベアード(米国)は1打及ばす2位タイ。この日8つスコアを伸ばす猛チャージをみせたティム・クラーク(南アフリカ)もベアードと並び2位タイでフィニッシュ。2打差の4位タイにはスコット・ブラウン(米国)、ブライアン・ゲイ(米国)、ジョン・センデン(オーストラリア)の3選手が入った。

　国内男子ツアーに出場した石川遼はポイントの加算はなく8位から10位に後退。松山英樹は20位となっている。

【舩越園子コラム】「Matsuyama」の風刺ネタに思うこと

　今週の米ツアーは開幕第5戦のマクグラデリー・クラシックが開催されていた。だが、この大会に対する日本の注目は限りなくゼロに近かった。なぜなら、言うまでもなく、石川遼も松山英樹も出場していなかったからだ。

　「日本人選手が出ていないんだから興味ないよ」と日本のゴルフファンが言ったとしても、それはまあ、そうなんだろうなあと頷ける。だが、米ツアーの新シーズンの開幕シリーズだと言うのに、お膝元の米国のゴルフファンが、いやいや肝心の米ツアー選手たちまでもが「興味ない」と言うようでは、米ツアーの先行きが心配になる。

　米ツアーは今年から大幅なシステム変更の実施に踏み切り、新たなシーズンの開幕時期が従来の1月から10月へ前倒しされた。そして、これまでは「フォールシリーズ」と呼ばれていた10月からの4～6試合が今年からは「シーズンオープニングシリーズ＝開幕シリーズ」という名に改められた。それはもちろん、米ツアーに思惑、目的があるからこその大幅改革だ。

　しかし、初の試みである今年の現状は、米メディアによれば「惨憺たるもの」との酷評だ。ある米ゴルフ雑誌に、ちょっと嫌味を込めながら面白おかしく綴る風刺的な時評欄が設けられている。私はそこを読むたびに毎回くすっと笑ってしまうのだが、そこに、こんな下りを発見した。

　『米ツアーの新システム下の新シーズンはフライズコム・オープンから開幕したが、その大会の出場選手の中のトップランクは世界ランク30位（当時）のHideki Matsuyamaだった――結局、何にも変わってないね』

　さて、これがどういう風刺なのか、おわかりになるだろうか？

　そもそも、なぜ今年から米ツアーは10月開幕に変わったのか。「なぜなんですか？」と日本の記者陣からも何度も尋ねられたので、ここであらためてまとめてみよう。

　昨年まで、フライズコム・オープンから始まっていたフォールシリーズ数試合はシード落ちすれすれの選手たちが翌年の出場権獲得を目指して必死に戦う「最後の砦」だった。それゆえ、そんな瀬戸際の決戦にビッグスターが出場するはずはなく、シード確定レベル以上の選手にとっても「興味ない」「出場しない」大会だった。

　そんなフォールシリーズを暗い「最後の砦」から華々しい「新シーズンの幕開け」へ変えれば、これらの大会のイメージも変わるはず。フォールシリーズのときには付与されなかったフェデックスカップポイントも与え、優勝すればマスターズに出られるといった特典や魅力も与えれば、人気のなかったフォールシリーズが華々しい開幕シリーズになるはず。

　そうなれば、主要な選手、トップクラスの選手たちもこぞって出場し、人々の興味や関心も煽ることができ、よりビッグなスポンサーの獲得やテレビ中継の拡大につながるはず……それが、米ツアーの思惑だった。

　しかし、蓋を開けてみれば、開幕戦にトップクラスの選手たちの姿はやっぱりなく、世界ランクで一番上だったのは米ツアーメンバーになりたての外国人の松山だった。だからあの時評は「結局、何にも変わってないね」と皮肉って書いていたのだ。

　開幕シリーズはその後、マレーシア、上海へと舞台を移し、逆に米国を離れたその2試合には、お金の魅力やWGCタイトルの魅力もあったため、華のある米ツアー選手が多数出場して、関係者も胸を撫で下ろしていた。だが、開幕シリーズが米本土に戻った今週の大会は、またまた地味な顔ぶれへ。

　とはいえ、どんな改革も浸透するまでにはそれなりの時間がかかるもの。チェンジには移行期間が付きものだ。今年より来年、来年より再来年、開幕シリーズに出場するトップランクの選手たちが徐々に増えていけば、米ツアーが改革に踏み切ったかいはあったということになる。

　気になるのは、ネタとして使われたこの時評を、松山と彼の母国である日本の私たちは、どう受け取り、どう生かすべきかという点だ。

　「トップランクが日本人なんて、うれしい」「松山、すごい」という具合に、そのまんま、楽観的に受け取ることは、もちろんできる。

　だが、もしも、米ゴルフ雑誌から「バカにされた」「軽視された」「ふん！トップが松山で悪かったな」という具合に少しでも「チェッ！」と憤慨を感じたら、その憤慨を「今に見ていろ」「いつか見返してやる」という発奮材料にしてほしい。

　そして、世界でもトップクラスのあの日本人選手が米ツアーの開幕シリーズに出てくれるなんて「すごい」「うれしい」「これで米ツアーの改革は大成功だ」と米メディアに書かせるような、そういう存在になることを日本の選手も日本のゴルフ界も本気で目指そうではないか。そんなの夢物語だよ、無理無理とみんなが思えば、いつまで経ってもそれは夢のまま、無理のまま……。

　シニカル時評に見つけた「Matsuyama」の文字を眺めながら、そんなことを考えた。
